Repair bench log: the 217th pack to come home
Six years of use, two centimetres of shoulder strap worn through, and one question: can it last three more?
The pack was bought in 2020 by a gardener who carries tools, soil and lunch to a nursery twice a week. Six years later the right shoulder strap is worn through by two centimetres and the base has lost its water repellency. The zip is still original.
The bench works in order: remove the strap, check whether the webbing base can still take load, cut a colour-matched 25 mm strap, double-stitch it back through the original load points, then wash and re-proof the whole bag. Two hours forty minutes. Thirty-four yuan in materials.
She asked whether it could last three more years. Structurally, yes — but the base fabric has thinned, and we suggested replacing the base panel next year. It is the first time we have done a second major repair on the same pack.
We have logged every repair since 2022. At number 217 we can finally answer a design question: the zip is almost never the first failure. The strap-to-body junction is. The next Yuxing 22 turns that junction into an independently replaceable module.
